The full guide to every way into high school — who can apply, what each one costs, what they look at, and how seats are decided. Thirteen pages, but most families only use three or four of them. Start on page 2.

The Six Ways Into High School

  • Reads 7th grade · Entrance exam · Free — Public exam school in Providence. October exam, then committee review of the whole file. Providence residents only. I complete the application for your student.

  • Lottery · Entrance exam · Free — Statewide public school in Lincoln, ten technical programs, busing from Providence. Clear the exam threshold and you're in a lottery. Acceptance is conditional until you finish 8th grade.

  • Reads 7th grade · Essay + interview · Free — Career programs inside district high schools. Scored out of 100: essay 20, my recommendation 30, interview 30, 7th grade grades and attendance 20. The window is about five days in January.

  • Lottery · Free — One EnrollRI application covers every charter you rank, and adding a school costs nothing. No academic criteria. The lottery is April 1 every year.

  • Reads 7th grade · Entrance exam · Tuition, aid available — Deadlines run from late November through January and differ by school. Every school offers aid, and what families pay is often far below published tuition.

  • Lottery · Free — Grades and attendance aren't considered. Because we're a charter school, you must register with PPSD first — district students get the form automatically and ours don't.
